Iberian settlements in Requena

Iberians were settled in our district over 2500 years ago and we still keep many remains.

They had a very hierarchical society, led by a small group of people who organized the use of the land and controlled the commercial relationships from fortified cities. Day to day life took place in smaller houses where they cooked, ate and slept, but also worked as artisans and used them to cult ancestors and divinities. If you are interested in this piece of history and want to know further, visit the website of Valencia’s Prehistoric Museum.

We suggest visiting the main three settlements in our district.

La Solana de las Pilillas

This settlement is formed by a series of rock excavations related to wine making: a winery, warehouses and the ruins of a fortified building that was used as a temporary house for the landlord during the harvesting season.

The winery is made by two sinks placed at different heights connected by holes. In the higher one the grapes were crushed and the must was transferred to the one in the bottom, and then to other containers for the fermentation process.

These are the oldest wineries of all the Iberian Peninsula.

They are, as well, the beginning of the “wine culture” that we still have in the district.

El Molón in Camporrobles

El Molón is a big, high hill (1124m over sea level), structured in several platforms. The settlement has optimal defensive conditions, due to the deep cliffs around it.

The settlement in El Molón is quite well preserved and has unique characteristics such as the landscape that surrounds it: the limit between Cuenca and Requena-Utiel, with a beautiful savin forest and impressive vineyards.

We recommend visiting the Interpretation Center to get a better understanding of the settlement.

Kelin, the great iberian city

Located in Caudete de las Fuentes, Kelin was the capital city of a vast land, almost a third of the actual province of Valencia.

The excavations show urban buildings from two time periods and a piece of the defensive wall.

Every October they are open with guided tours and cultural activities.

You can complete the visit with the museographic collection Luis García de Fuentes, next to the town hall.
