Casa Lucía

La Villa: a walk through history

Wander across our medieval neighbourhood and discover the charm of its corners and small squares. Follow the ruins of the ancient defensive walls and towers and the different entrance doors to the old muslim town.

Open the main door of Casa Lucía, and you’ll find yourself in the main street of the old town, Santa Maria St., where the old knights built their houses. From there, you can start a nice walk through all the other streets: Somera, Purísima, Callejón de Paniagua...and you will know the Medina, the Judería and the main monuments:

St Nicolás church. The eldest in Requena, from the XIII century, and with a neoclassical facade. It has been recently rebuilt with modern details such as a glass ceiling.

Santa María church. From the XIV century, features an impressive gothic facade. It was restored a few years ago and currently it houses art exhibitions and music concerts.

El Salvador church. The only one open to cult. It is from the gothic period and has the Capilla de la Comunión next to it.

La Villa square. It is the main square in the neighbourhood and where most of the events take place. Full of bars and restaurants, a small winery and the access to the Caves of la Villa, a must visit in Requena.

El Cid palace. As the legend tells, it was the home of el Cid Campeador. Nowadays, it houses the Wine Museum of the city.

THE CASTLE

It is formed by La Torre del Homenaje, the main tower of the all wall, which has an interactive museum about the history of Requena, the Castle Square, the Patio de armas, where you can enjoy movies during the summer, and la Cuesta del Castillo: the main access to the neighbourhood. Visit Fortaleza St, next to the old wall and find the Arbol square.
In this area you can enjoy a nice meal in the restaurants Fortaleza and El Yantar.

LA JUDERÍA
The place where all the artisans met. The streets are named after the trades practiced in them.

ACCESS DOORS:

Cuesta de las Carnicerías o de San Julián. Former access from Valencia. It features a giant mural tributing the butchers that used to work there.

Cuesta del Cristo: facing west. There you will find the little chapel of el Cristo del Amparo.

Cuesta y Puerta del Ángel. It leads to the contemporary art museum “Florencio de la Fuente”.

OTHER BUILDINGS

Casa de los Pedrón. The house of a Nobel family.

Casa de Santa Teresa. Located in front of Santa Maria church, it houses the city Archive.

Casa del Arte Mayor de la Seda. Where the silk artisans met. You will find the Silk Museum. The facade features a reredos of St Jerónimo.

Arrabal neighbourhood

Nowadays it is the city center, where almost all of the commercial activities are found: butcheries, bakeries, banks, markets…

Walk along the main avenue, from la Fuente de los Patos to the Exhibition Center. On your way, you will see the Fuente de Colores, the Monumento a la Vendimia and the bull ring.

Make the most of this walk by sitting down on one of the multiple terraces to have a bite and something to drink.

You can also visit the Glorieta park, next to the town hall, and the Carmen church, with the Town Museum.

Las Peñas neighbourhood

Muslim families moved from La Villa to a rocky hill after la Reconquista, giving birth to a new neighbourhood where farmers and shepherds lived. They kept their own traditions and religion until the mid XIV century, when they turned into catholicism or were expelled.

In this neighborhood you will find St Sebastián chapel and some of the steepest and narrowest streets in Requena.
